Betfair: Line and Range Betting Explained

Line Betting

Line betting is a form of even money betting, as in you either double your money or lose your stake when betting. Line betting is when you buy or sell a ‘line’ number of how many runs, points, shots, goals, or other statistic that a team or individual will perform in a sporting event. Here is some advice on line betting at Betfair.

Buying and selling lines

When line betting, you buy or sell a line at one particular price, depending on whether you think the result will be more or less than that number. If you buy a line at a number then you think that the number achieved in the event for that statistic will be higher. For example, if you buy Henry Premiership goals in a season at 25, then you believe he will get more than this in a season. Equally, if you sell a line, you believe there will be less than this number. So, buying Henry Premiership goals at 25 you believe he will get less than this. If the number is exactly 25 then you neither win nor lose.

If you bet on a number that isn’t a whole number, for example, Henry at 24.7 goals, then you have a 0.5 margin of error. This means that if he scores 25 goals, you don’t get the full amount of winnings. Equally, if you bought 24.2 and Henry scored 24, you would not lose your entire stake.

Line betting is often known as ‘Handicapping’, in that the price of the line is such that the final result is both as likely to be less or more than the number you pick. This means the bet is always even money.

As with all other bets on Betfair, you can buy or sell the lines, in effect taking or laying bets.

Range Betting

Range betting is similar to line betting in some ways, in that it is to do with placing a bet on statistics within an event. However, you have a fixed odds range in range betting, and the profit or loss is equal to the difference between the level of the bet you choose and the final result, multiplied by your stake.

For example, if you ‘buy’ 3 goals at £10 per goal, you believe that the amount of goals scored in the game will be greater than 3. Any goals scored above the 3 goals and you will get £10 per goal. Any goals below the amount and you will lose £10 per goal.

You should buy numbers when you think that the amount will be greater than the level you buy, and sell when you think it will be less.

To limit the damage each way, there is a maximum and minimum range you can lose. For example, if you buy 10 shots then the maximum win or loss might be seven, meaning that if the team only shoots 2 you only lose 7 times your amount per shot, or if the team shoots more than 17 you only gain 7 times your amount per shot.
