A Guide to Asian Handicap Betting

Asian Handicap Betting

Asian Handicap betting is so-called because it is very popular in the Far East and Asia as a whole. It is a type of betting that is mainly used for football, and involves making both teams equal. Here is an explanation of Asian Handicap betting and how it works on Betfair.

What is a ‘Handicap’?

The term ‘handicap’ means that the teams have been made equal by giving the weaker of the two teams a virtual head start, with anything between ¼ and 2 goals as a usual amount. When you bet using the Asian Handicap betting, there can be no draw in a game. There can only be a win or lose. If the game ends in a draw then your stake is returned.

Handicap levels

The levels of handicap can get a bit confusing, with there being ¼ handicap and ½ handicap. The simplest forms of handicaps are 0 or whole goal handicaps. For example, if you bet on a team to win with Asian Handicap of 0, then both teams are equal. If your team wins you get the money, if they lose you lose your money, and if they draw the bet is void and you get your stake back.

With whole goal Handicap betting such as +1, +2, -2, -3, etc, then the same rules apply only that you need to take into account the goals handicap. For example, if you bet on a team who have –1 handicap, and they win by one goal, then the game is draw and the bet is void. You need to win or lose by overcoming or not overcoming the number of handicap goals.

When you get to ¼ and ½ handicaps things become a little more complex. Basically, this is when two teams are quite close but they cannot be put at handicap 0, or at a full number. For example, you might bet on a team with a handicap of -1.5. This means that your team has to win by 2 goals or more, or else they lose. In these bets there is no chance of a draw or void bet at all.

In the case of ¼ handicap one is set at, for example, 0 and 0.5 for each team respectively. This makes the overall handicap ¼. Therefore, the bet is divided between two odds. For example, if I bet on a team with ¼, then if they draw half the bet is void and the other is loss, so I lose half my bet. If the team win then I win, but if they lose then I lose. The bet is divided between a 0 handicap and 0.5 handicap. Or, in the case of a ¾ bet, odds of 1.0 and 0.5.

Asian Handicap markets

Asian Handicap markets are very similar to normal odds betting markets, in that you can put up and take offers on Betfair as you would with any other market. However, because the rules of more complex you cannot display the profit and loss for the market. However, when placing bets you can get information on the outcome for that bet.
As with all markets, money will be reserved from your account to cover your worst outcome on a bet. However, if you learn how to use Asian Handicap well then you could make some good money at Betfair.
